Revealed: How Ogbonaya Onu Awarded N329 Million Contract To His Company

A Nigerian Minster, Mr. Ogbonnaya Onu, the Minister of Science and Technology, is caught up in a contract scam.

Mr. Onu has abused the Public Procurement Act and allocated a contract in the National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure, NASENI, an agency under his ministry to his company.

A document leaked to NAIJA NEWS BEAT by a senior staff of the agency shows that NASENI under the leadership of Mr. Mohammed Haruna, the Vice Chairman and Chief Executive Officer had on the 1st day of February 2017, awarded a contract for the construction of its office extension to Hortigraph Nigeria Limited in the sum of 329,139,405.15 million, a company that belongs to Mr. Ogbonaya Onu, the current Minister for Science and Technology.

The award of the contract appears a shocking example of the abuse of office that has helped undermine the country’s ability to tackle corruption and provide for its citizens.

Another senior staff of the agency in a phone conversation told our reporter that the award of the contract is a bribe in return for Mr. Onu to shield and protect Haruna whose tenure elapsed since March 2017, to continue his stay in office.

Three different civil engineers told our reporter, that amount is enough to pull down the whole agency and build it from the scratch. Also, checks with various estate developers gave a glimpse into the cost of the building at about N100 million showing a huge difference of over N229 million.

Often, respective government agencies work out a false cover by pretending to have spent monies allocated to them due diligently, whereas most of their action in the procurement process indeed have corrupt practices.

Mr. Sunny Onyeukwu, the Senior Assistant to the minister, denied comment on the matter.

An insider source in the agency, told NAIJA NEWS BEAT, Mr. Onu, has seen huge corruption go on under his watch at the agency. The agency under Mr. Onu has become an era of propaganda and ‘thievery’ she laments.

Another senior staff of the agency told our reporter, so long as Mr. Onu, keeps shielding Mr. Haruna from stepping aside having completed his tenure by March 2017, the corruption in the agency will continue unabated.

When our reporter sought the response of NASENI regarding the award of the contract, Mr. Haruna, said he cannot respond to anonymous or faceless sources.

I do not respond to anonymous or faceless sources. I need evidence that can withstand, Sani said.
